I'm with you, motorbikes are the best way to travel, you can't beat the feeling (and fear!) not to put temptation in your way but... you should have a look on http://exchangeandmart.co.uk for a load of used motorbikes for sale, it's always worth a look to see what's available, it takes some self-restraint not to buy them all though!

Well I hope they've kept it well. Actually I think SB are making a few more efforts these days to get their places back on track. I hope it continues!

I think your "take" on weight loss is spot on.

People go on crazy diets that might miraculously work in the short-term but overall fail because they're based on stupidity. By the other extreme, I know people who try to not eat much at all & that doesnt work cos their bodies go into starvation mode instead.

The only solution is common sense, healthy eating, exercise and time. Trouble is, people are usually too impatient for their own good & give up if they dont see those results quickly enough.

All good things come to he who waits, dont they?

In short there are no quick fixes, one size does not fit all and did you know that there are 3500 calories in a pound of body fat!!

Having said all that, I agree, the benefits of a healthy lifestyle are certainly worth the effort. Just find something you enjoy to keep you fit and healthy for the long haul.

Personally I go back to your opening line - gym is for "building muscle, for improving heart and lung function, for strengthening bones and increasing blood flow". I would also add that strong muscles help protect joints too! Wow - if more people did that as a minimum, surely there would be broader benefits to public health. Isn't that one of the reasons why the government is "actively" (no pun intended) nudging us all to do more exercise generally http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7204257.stm. Agreed on a nice day, being inside a gym may not be everyone's idea of a good time, but it certainly has a valuable role to play - as long as, coming back to the point I think you were making - we have the right expectations! As for a supplementary activity here's a good example for those runners amongst us http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?uan=3896

Nope. But you do have to understand that the things you're hoping to get out of doing the the gym might not actually be the things you end up getting out if it.
